Bartering

Hangin' in a half-bag from enLIGHTened equipment. Signed by the artist.

The upside of having someone else spin the Boilers is that I don’t have to do it while also trying to, oh, study for finals and finish a seminar paper. The downside is that there’s little for me to do other than sit on my hands and wait for the next step in the process. Thanksgiving slowed things down, but I should be able to approve a sample next week so production can begin in proper.

In the meantime, I received the third* item that has been exchanged in barter for one of the Boilers: a custom half-bag by Tim Marshall of enLIGHTened equipment. Not only is he a super nice guy, but he’s a skilled seamster. I’ve sewn a quilt myself, but this one is clearly superior. Top-quality notions, clean seams, smart design. Tim’s also going to be joining forces with Sanborn Canoe starting in early 2011, so I think we can expect even more exciting things to come.

Although I’ve only used it in my apartment, it’s already a favorite piece. There’s just something about the exchange of craft for craft.

*The others were the Backcountry Boiler logo and a map another friend of mine made for me for an article in BackpackingLight.

Devin,

Thanx for the kind words. I love gear exchanges as I like you love great gear design in all its forms. Glad you’re happy and can’t wait to try out the boiler!

With the risk of going too far down the mutual-admiration-society path – thanks, Tim! I can’t wait to get that quilt into the outdoors, where it belongs. :)
