Where they’re going: Redux

by Devin on November 20, 2010

Still haven't figured out my javascript quandary, so the image is static. Larger circles still represent more orders, but the scale has changed - the largest circle represents 15 rather than 7 orders.

Sooo… the 100 (plus a few I let slide in :) ) Boilers available for pre-order sold out in exactly a week! Since the last update on the destinations of my wares, there has been some exciting action:

  • Domestically, California apparently took up Doug’s challenge and surged all the way to 15. Washington still had a good showing at 9, Illinois had 7, and Tennessee came in a close 4th at 6. Overall, 28 states were represented.
  • Internationally, the Boiler caught fire (pardon the pun) in Japan with 7, Canada had 5, and there was a three-way tie for third between Denmark, France, and the UK – each with 2 a piece. Including the US, 11 countries got in on the madness.

The support this project has gotten, not only in terms of sales, but in word-of-mouth has been humbling. Over the last week, in return for nothing else but my thanks, folks have spread the word through forums, forums, forums, forums (I know there are a couple others, but they’re access-limited to members), blogs, and on Twitter. So cool.

The other thing that has come out of this week is a lot of data. Not just what countries and states the orders came from, but when people ordered, what options they chose, how the tip percentages were distributed, even data on who came by the blog. While I may not be all that great at javascript, there is one thing I am really good at: Excel pivot tables. And I’ve spent the morning parsing out different perspectives on the data. Because it’s my understanding that those who have supported this project are interested not only in the product, but the process, I’m going to work up some charts on that data and send it out to those who have placed orders. Think of it as my first report to good-will shareholders. :)

Devin, I’d like to put Finland on the map – any chance there’s place for one more?!

Hey Devin, You put me about 1000 miles northwest of where I live! I’m down in the extreme SE of AK aka “Alaska’s Banana Belt”. Look forward to seeing how it works in the rain…..

Well, I hate to concede but congratulations is due to California. Great job to our friends from the south! ;-) Doug

Sorry for taking so long guys – just started Thanksgiving break.

Hendrik – I emailed you back, as you’ve seen.

Chris – True that, I was lazy and just put in the name of the state or country into the program generating the map. That point is most apparent with you and Australia – I’m pretty sure it’s just desert where that dot is. I beg forgiveness. :)

Doug – Alas! They picked up your gauntlet, but I’m not too sorry about it. :)
