Okay, so there is one part of the Backcountry Boiler I didn’t design: the logo. And it sure is an important part: if the name of a brand is like, well, the name of a person, then the logo is its face. Fortunately, I had a super talented guy to give the Boiler something with character. His name’s Mat “Mo Money Mo Problems” Thorne, and not only is he a gifted photographer and designer, but he’s my homie. I’ve know him since elementary school, been friends with him since middle school, and he was one of the groomsmen at my wedding. So he designed the logo for me in exchange for one of the Boilers.
What’s also fortunate is that we share the design philosophy that less is more. And I love this logo: beautiful typography, a strong spot color, good proportions. The flame’s cozy but strong.
You should check out his stuff. He’s one of the founders of the up-and-coming design and web development company Sevenbay Design, teaches at Maine Media Workshops, and helped to start Obscura, a visual arts nonprofit. He also has a portfolio of his own stuff. Busy guy. :)

Niiiiiiice. Looks sharp! Love the flaming-O!
Thanks, Mike! And I like your stuff – your photography and your tinkering. Good luck with the woodgas!
That is cool. I must admit that the logo is very nice looking, simple, bold and cool. It goes well with your product. Speaking of which, I see that you met your mark! Congrats dude!
Thanks, Chad!
I like the logo! As your sister I would design you a chair for a boiler. :) A chair in which to do boiler business, maybe ultralight if you also get me those SHR photos!
Hey Kels, sorry for being such a delinquent – they’re uploading right now. :)
I think that shipping me the lathe was more than enough to earn you one, but I could always use new place to sit and ponder – especially a Kelsi Montgomery original.
Anyway, we should start Skyping. Rachel got me into it and it’s great! Except that it reminds me how much I need a haircut.
